Title: Struggling to Obey   Send to a Friend
Date: 11/14/2007

Friends,

Welcome to another addition of Women of Wisdom's (W.O.W) e-letter! W.O.W's mission is to encourage you to live the divine purpose for your life! Expect to see a W.O.W. e-letter monthly and be sure to pass them on to your friends.

When I was pregnant with our daughter, I had severe morning sickness during the first trimester.  I was miserable.  The problem was that it wasn’t only morning sickness.  I was nauseous all day, constantly feeling as though I would throw up at any moment but not being able to.  It was tough!

I remember the day I discovered some relief.

My husband had been saying I needed some thing to eat because I was avoiding food like the plague since the sight of it made me sick.  He kept insisting that I needed the nourishment and so did the baby.  I wanted to smack him for being right but instead I told him to bring me some dry toast and I cautiously nibbled on it thinking any minute it would come back up.  However a remarkable thing occurred!  The more toast I ate, the less nauseous I felt!  Not completely out of the woods, but clearly well enough to get up, I got dressed and went to work that day.

I soon discovered that if I nibbled on some crackers or toast or something throughout the day, the nausea abated.  In fact it became apparent that keeping my stomach from being completely empty was the remedy for my morning sickness.  I realize now that a spiritual principle was at work as well.  So many times we are miserable in our circumstances.  We find ourselves sick with worry and anxiety wondering what will tomorrow bring.  So much so that the last thing we may want to do is obey God and read His word.  But God’s word is exactly what we need during times of trouble.  We may think “how can I praise Him and give Him thanks when my situation is so bad?”

Everything within us wants to reject the only food that will nourish our souls and take away the queasiness of worry.  Many times we prefer to wallow in our struggle to fix things ourselves only to feel weaker and weaker as we refuse to submit to the power of God’s word.  My experience is that God is relentless.  He will not stop until we give in.  Day and night we will sense His quiet voice saying, “this is the path, walk in it.”  When we finally take that step in the direction of God’s word – He moves in like a flood with power to enable us to make the next step and then the next.  Before we realize it, we are walking in the truth of God’s word as we read it, meditate on it, and obey what He tells us to do.

Not long ago, while having this very same struggle, I decided to write about the struggle and the ultimate victory that comes when we decide to obey…

Struggling to Obey

Today is such a lovely day, the world looks bright, so clear the way

There is one thing I want to say

‘O Lord I wish I could obey.’

It started with a choice to make, to have my rights for my own sake

But then the other was less fair and yet God seemed to draw me there.

The civil war began that day

‘O Lord I wish I could obey.’

On I struggled deep within; it wasn’t clear which side would win

One day – my rights!   And then – no way!

The battle raged day after day.

My soul so tired and still I say,

‘O Lord I wish I could obey’

The fear, the turmoil of giving in, but yet my flesh still wants to win.

Maybe a compromise would save the day?

‘O Lord, I wish I could obey.’

No power left, no peace is found, the urge to lay my weapons down.

But there’s an enemy that has me bound, I can’t look up, I can’t turn ‘round.

With my small voice I finally say

‘O Lord please help me to obey.’

I wait for rescue; I hope for grace, I want the kindness of His face.

Is He still with me? Doubt brings dismay

My enemy smiles, “You can’t obey!”

But then His power, I hear Him say, “Let go! Unbind! Move out of My way!”

My enemy flees, I joyfully say,

‘O Lord you teach me to obey!’

Be Blessed!
